Established in 1999, Absynthe Magazine is Trent University's alternative press. The Absynthe Team is committed to a collective creative space that is unafraid of breaking from convention, to promoting works that are heartfelt and honest, and to showcasing the great imaginative strength of Trent University and the community that surrounds us. Absynthe Magazine operates on a submission basis: our submission portal can be found on our website and Instagram page.

What Absynthe Magazine provides:

Regular creative writing workshops

Written feedback on all creative writing submissions we receive during every call to submissions

Quarterly magazine releases (magazines are free and available to find in common spaces around campus and downtown Peterborough)

We pay $75 for each written piece we publish and $50 for each visual art piece we publish

Other writing-related events such as publishing panels, open mic nights, poetry in the park, etc.

The Anne Shirley Theatre Company brings quality theatre to Trent University each year. ASTC has historically produced one musical every year, and as of the 2013-2014 year, ASTC has grown to incorporate the production of a play as well as an improvisation group. ASTC strives to produce theatre programming within the Trent University Community that is as accessible and inclusive as possible. ASTC wishes to provide opportunities for students to experience all aspects of theatre, both on and off the stage.

Arthur Newspaper is the Trent University and Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Independent Student Press. We publish monthly during the school year and have a print circulation of about 1000 copies. Arthur’s goal as a print publication is to produce a newspaper that is valuable, constructive, informative and critical of developments in the university and Peterborough-Nogojiwanong community. We offer paid and volunteer positions to students as well as the opportunity to serve on our Board of Directors. Get involved by contributing articles or photography, assisting with editing, layout, or web development, helping with fundraising and events, and more! No experience necessary - anyone with an interest in student media is welcome.

Cam Hicks’ Kids Foundation (Cam’s Kids) is focused on supporting young people struggling with anxiety, helping them cope effectively to reach their full potential and realize their dreams.
Cam’s Kids is committed to “Supporting Young People Struggling with Anxiety” by:

Creating awareness of common anxiety symptoms in young people, assisting in early identification.

Providing tools, lifestyle tips and resources, empowering young people to learn how to manage and overcome anxiety, and know where to reach out for help.

Encouraging peer-to-peer support through our Nationwide Ambassador Program by sharing young people's stories, raising awareness of mental health, and creating a judgment-free community.

Cam’s Kids pursues this vision through three primary programs:

Cam's Kids’ website is the core component of the foundation. Through the website, newsletter and various social media channels, Cam's Kids provides the relevant information required to promote anxiety awareness, provide the tools, and tell the stories which enable us to achieve our mandate.

National Ambassador Program and Corporate Leaders Program

Cam's Kids believes in the transformative and empowering nature of peer and community support. When young people learn about anxiety and hear stories from others, there is often comfort in knowing that others care and may relate to what they are going through.

Our ambassadors are young volunteers and represent Cam's Kids in their respective communities across Canada. They promote awareness in high schools, universities, colleges, and community centres and assist in promoting Cam's Kids through other activities such as poster campaigns and volunteering at fundraising events in support of Cam's Kids.

Fundraising and Events

Cam's Kids supports and participates in fundraising events where proceeds are being raised for the foundation. These events help create awareness and promote community engagement, encouraging healthy discussions about anxiety and highlights the resources that exist on our website.

The Canadian Black Nurses Alliance at Trent University will promote the welfare and interests of Black and racialized students enrolled in the Trent University Nursing Program (BScN), and to provide support, activities, publications, social forums and events which address the needs of Black and racialized nursing students. The main reason for the CCOT’s existence is to make saints at Trent University. More specifically, the ultimate goal of the CCOT is to make every student, faculty member, and staff member of Trent University a living saint on the way to eternal union with God in Heaven. The CCOT aims to do this by providing students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to take part in events built on Catholic tradition and teachings in a safe, welcoming, and easily accessible environment. Secondarily, the CCOT aims to promote Catholic teachings and traditions in an attitude of tolerance, compassion, and love.

The CCOT welcomes all Trent students, faculty, and staff to join any or all of its regularly-held events. Those who wish to be an official member of the CCOT must join the student-run WhatsApp group chat Council of Trent University.”

The Centre for Gender and Social Justice (CGSJ) is a Trent levy group and grassroots organization. We are a space dedicated to fostering community connection within the Nogojiwanong area. We spearhead initiatives centred on community-based care, with a particular focus on supporting gender-marginalized and BIPOC communities. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives to engage with our work.

We are dedicated to mutual aid and resource redistribution to support those impacted by gender-based oppression. Our focus is on prioritizing the needs of BIPOC and those most affected by cis-heteronormativity in our community. Guided by anti-oppression and feminist principles, we recognize how gender experiences are influenced by racism, colonialism, classism, ableism, cis-heteronormativity, and other forms of oppression.

The Trent Community Movements Conference is an annual event organized by the Trent student-led group, the Trent Association for Global Development (TAGD). The event aims to provide a forum for students and academic scholars to discuss issues pertaining to global development.

The Community Race Relations Committee of Peterborough (CRRC) is a non-profit community-based organization committed to encouraging and promoting anti-racism and equitable race and community relations throughout Peterborough/Nogojiwanong.

CRRC supports the basic principle that all individuals in Canada are equal in dignity and rights, and its strategies are aimed at identifying and eliminating all forms of institutional and systemic discrimination while recognizing the ways in which all forms of oppression from sexism and queerphobia to social class and colonialism intersect with racism.

CRRC is available to assist community members, students and/or groups on matters relating to racism and ethnic discrimination within a variety of contexts through advocacy supports, consultation services, and public education initiatives/events for the purposes of promoting greater understanding of race-related and community issues. Any and all who may experience racism and other social ills within any of Peterborough’s spaces and/or wish to help challenge it are encouraged to connect with CRRC as we venture to build a most inclusive region across our many diversities.

In August 2020, the TCSA undertook a comprehensive review of our policies, training, advocacy, and community engagement practices to identify areas for improvement in supporting anti-racism initiatives and addressing the needs of our BIPOC and racialized members, leading to the creation of the Freedom Lounge, a safe place where BIPOC students could come together and celebrate culture, diversity, experiences, and more. As the seasons have evolved and the utilization of this space by BIPOC students has increased, it became clear that a change was necessary. The name “Freedom Lounge” no longer resonated with students as it once did.

As of August 2024, we are pleased to announce that the Freedom Lounge will now be known as the CIRCLE, which stands for Culture, Inclusion, Rejoicing, Community, Lounge, Experience. This new designation reflects our commitment to providing a culturally safe, comfortable, and accountable space where students can build community, feel empowered, celebrate their lived experiences, and honor the diverse cultures and heritages present on our campus.

In this space, we are dedicated to engaging all students in initiatives that actively challenge and dismantle oppressive, racist, and colonial ideologies and practices. We invite students of all backgrounds to join us in uniting our community and learning from our history to ensure that we do not repeat past injustices.

Trent's youngest college, in the yellow Enwayaang building, is a place to unite the community’s roots with new members who will define its future.

Gzowski College is named after the distinguished Canadian broadcaster and former Trent Chancellor, Peter Gzowski.

Adored by Canadians, he was most famous as someone who listened and welcomed conversation and diverse opinions. That makes it fitting that Gzowski College is housed within Trent’s Enwayaang Building, an Anishinaabek word meaning “the way we speak together.”

Indigenous knowledge is central to our spirit and influences our programming and collaborations with departments in our collegiate community, including the First Peoples House of Learning.
